activity tracker, point counter, oh my!

Hi everyone! I'm super excited by some feedback I received on Plurk over some possible ways to keep your Activity Threads + Bonus Points neat and tidy. I want to share the information with you so you guys can keep up to day!

So! An example of the thread tracker is here on my journal which uses Google Spreadsheets to make the layout and design. This is ideal now since 1, there's no coding really needed and 2, you're able to see points and organize your threads and 3, with the use of formulas... you can automatically total your points!

1. You'll need a Gmail address. You can use your RP or personal. Since we're embedding, it doesn't really promote your information as an owner.

2. Create a Google Spreadsheet and name it whatever you'd like! This is where editing will take place, not on your journal. You can set the sheet to private editing by your address only.

3. I highly suggest you delete excess columns and rows. By doing this, you click on the letters or numbers on the horizontal/vertical rows. Holding shift, you can click multiples and delete in mass. I try to keep 7ish columns on mine and adjust the width of them accordingly.

4. When formatting, you can use the above image for reference for styling! You can add background colors, change fonts and sizes, etc. For the second in Green, I do note the second button in that area be set to "Word Wrap" so your words go to the next line and not bleed into other columns!

5. By using the formula =sum(columnletter:columnletter), you're able to have your points automatically totaled up! You'll want to change "#column" to your column. For instance, mine was F. Here's a screencap to show how to get the right column. Please note: you can not put the 'activity points' section in the column you're calculating or you get an error! So, my 'activity points' formula is in column G.

6. Once you're done with your stuff, you can add future months at the bottom of the form called "Sheets" - so you're working with multiple "Sheets" in one document! You can see that here.

7. You now can get the embed code! It's a simple process, just hit File > Publish to Web > and then hit Embed document. In this embed code, you'll want to put before the ending tag "width=700px" or a number that fits the width of your spreadsheet! I don't suggest making it super wide, but that's a personal preference. :) Just grab the embed code and slap it onto your entry for tracking.

When you update this form, you'll update it in Google Spreadsheets in your browser and it should update in your journal seamlessly since it is a embed code working from an iframe! :)
