Death Note Mini-Plot

Hello friends! Those of you on my plurk have likely already seen, but Light Yagami (Akira Turner in this AU) has finally received the Death Note.

Only good things can come from that, right?

That being said! The AU of the AU, at the moment, Light is Goro Akechi's big brother (yes, because that's an excellent combination) where their family is part of a long-standing crime ring. They're on the lower rung, but their father died under suspicious circumstances. And now that Light has the Death Note, he's testing it out. On NPCs! For revenge!

This is going to be the start of Light having this available as a mechanic in game. I have received Mod approval for the NPC deaths below. (Names totally made up, but feel free to have your character familiar with them!) This may ping any characters IC who are either involved with the police/justice system or are also involved in the more unsavory parts of Recolle. Any sort of medical hospital staff or emergency services may be privy as well due to the sudden increase in deaths.

The first few NPCs to die probably didn't make much news, but the latter ones likely will. At the end of these few weeks, Light will have offed the head of this crime ring. And (as many of you who are familiar with the canon can probably tell), has tested the different methods that he can use the Death Note.

But this plot here is for two things: 1.) Light testing the Death Note and building up on crime for other interested parties to be part of, hopefully leading to Light's eventual downfall, and 2.) opening up the possibility for PC deaths in the future. Yes, that is right, you TOO may be one of Light's victims someday! That is something we will have to discuss on our own, but it should be noted that there is no permadeath in Recolle, even with the Death note, which means character death penalties will apply.

I am planning on having some sort of network post revolving around this! A log itself might be difficult as Light himself won't be at the scenes of these crimes, for the most part, but I am open if there is something specific that you would like to write out or be a part of in regards to the discovery and investigation aspects of these deaths. I am all for Light snooping around to see how other people are reacting to his handiwork.

If you would like to be involved in this plot in ANY fashion please comment! I am happy to expand on this an answer any questions as they arise.

I would say "Light no" but I know how this series goes and how little good that will do lmao

I have a question / potential testing opportunity? For the August 8th's apparent suicide, during that time Jen here is inhabiting the body of Kara Ellis a.k.a. Supergirl and will at least in part be testing out her limits, such as super hearing, flight, and so on and so forth.

Would you be open to a scenario where she is out and about patrolling, hears someone shouting for help as they witness another person about to jump off a bridge, and then Jen swoops in to save them? I admit I haven't watched the show in ages and I don't know how any attempt like this would play out. Like, would the person just keep trying until they succeeded, would they try to off themselves some other way, or would Akira have to step in and make an edit to the cause/time of death in the Death Note to make it still come true?

Just a thought! I'm not married to any ideas but if he's snooping in on this one there's potential for him to be overheard as Jen's super senses are keen but not under the best control, yet she's never met or spoken to him so it's not like she would recognize him or be able to pinpoint a position.

oh god, EITHER would freak her out but I could just see him like... trying to walk it off and then idk getting pancaked by a car that was swerving to avoid whoever had stopped in the first place because they were late to a meeting or something lmao

I'm down for that! If you don't get enough of these to warrant a log of your own I have a TL for the bodyswap days Jen is going through on the event log though I imagine it'll need its fair share of warnings either way...

Time for some dramatic writing?

Since Light is killing criminals I was thinking Matt while out as Daredevil might witness something since he'd be seeking out these scumbags in order to punch them. The boss of the crime ring would be the one he'd be most motivated to find and knock out for handing over to the authorities. He generally focuses on the more violent bad guys out there.

Alternatively, he might witness something as plain ol' Matt Murdock thanks to his senses. Either way, it would be interesting for him to be a witness to at least one of these deaths since he'd be able to tell they suffered a heart attack, smell drugs, etc.

Knowing Light, if Daredevil eventually became a nuisance, he might try to get rid of him by attempting to frame him for some deaths.

HELLO!!!!!!!

So I don't have any concrete ideas going into this and I'm super flexible about whatever-- Miai might be able to be involved Somehow perhaps?

Miai is part of a religious sect that goes by Rosetis Angeli (functionally a cult, and pretty shady at that if you dig even a little but pretty nice on the surface), and Miai is one of the higher ups here in Recolle as a ~representative to facilitate shadier underground dealings for the cult, sorta drag some people into some darker business, spread the good word, etc. So he may have connections to the crime ring by way of Rosetis being partnered with them for whatever shady reasons, and Miai having met with them to discuss deals where long-distance communication failed, etc.

So he may eventually notice a pattern to the deaths being that they're all part of the same ring he works with (I mean, he might not know all the names, but he'll probably start to notice the names higher up the ladder, especially as Light offs the head-- not good for business!!).

This can lead to more general involvement on Miai's part as Light's arc progresses ("general" because, I doubt he'd know it was Light, but I can still chuck him in Light's vague direction/the direction of your post when it goes up), or it's possible Light may know of Rosetis as a business partner and Miai as someone who's dealt with them directly. While this doesn't have to lead to a death (I'm open to whatevs you feel is natural!), it could lead to more specific involvement since, well, Miai is Shady and There, and he's done his fair share of shady stuff (as well as facilitating shady stuff done by other people) so he's not exactly spotless. He just thinks he's justified :'3c

Sounds good to me! His logical next move would be to alert the authorities which could make for some interesting rare contact between Daredevil and the police. Guess I'll poke any police characters involved in your plot.

I'm defs down for them having met by chance! It'd be good information for Miai to know himself, too, to draw a clean line between people he drags into Rosetis business and people related by blood to the group whom he shouldn't be touching. Knowing Light might also open up the possibility of Miai being able to connect some dots himself as well as having an excuse to hit him up (he's not one to be shy around people who are just acquaintances!)-- I'm not sure how obvious the connection between the deaths and Light/Light's family might become over time, but it's something he'd certainly look into himself (once he starts to get suspicious of foul play).

In regards to the cult view of things, I'm totally interested in playing with that :3c!!!! It's very possible that they may begin to see it as divine punishment from God himself. Rosetis, generally, validates their own actions just, but condemns others for doing similar but not doing it in God's name, or for not having a "beneficial" consequence to counterbalance the shady stuff. It might be possible that, while Rosetis and this group may have had a partnership, Rosetis may have been disgruntled by some of the demands being made of them or felt cheated by certain exchanges/terms-- so when this group starts getting dealt with, it would fuel the flame of "God is looking out for us, see :)!"

Miai, in canon (as Eichi), develops a bit of a God complex briefly himself-- but he's far from it in Recolle where he's very tabula rasa. He is pulling away from Rosetis somewhat in terms of beliefs, but he does align himself with them at present; so if he feels the group has done Rosetis wrong and their deaths may be divine punishment, he'd be willing to buy into that too, and that may come up casually with Light in a future conversation pertaining to the deaths?

But I bring up the canon god complex thing because it might be interesting for Miai as well if Light ever ends up rearing that faucet of himself in Miai's direction-- idk what would come of it but it would be Interesting, or, perhaps, a big mood, (in canon, Eichi himself carries out a purge for ~the good of all~ in a sense, which involved less direct murder and more psychological warfare/emotional breakdowns/possibly some suicides, unfortunately) ... very tiny in scale compared to Light, but perhaps a commonality in mindset that could be interesting if it ever comes up!

Regardless of how things go down, I'm totally all for Miai getting offed for being either a nuisance or a criminal (or both). He also hasn't fully regained it (he's gained 1/3 of it, will be regaining the other 2 tiers as months progress), but Miai does have a terminal illness waiting in the wings for him to gain the rest of, which might make him pretty easy for Light to take care of should he need to :'3c!

sounds good~

as a note, I thought about it, and in the effort to not make Jen totally flip out about failing to help someone and it end in crushing guilt because haha she has plenty of that already coming up... I think I'd like to stick to "caught the man falling, but he has a heart attack anyway" and then the worst thing she has to do is explain that to the paramedics and police...

LOVE IS OVER

okay, i thought about this more too late, but would this Erick Hartgrove (crime ring boss) be one that Ren would know of through his parents. he still doesn't know that Light and Goro are just as shady in history, but it'll raise a lot of concern for him since it would seem out of character for a boss to end it like that.

i'm sure he would just talk about it as a normal topic, rather than based on their criminal background, because he has heard the name from his parents... it can spark some discussion and conversation over how strange it seems or just Justice in general if it's better that the man is dead, etc.

shut up freya

/SITS SELF DOWN IN HERE

Okay, so now that Tatsuo is a CSI again, I want to throw him in. Since he was sort of out to the loop due to spending most of the summer as a high school science teacher enjoying his off-season, most of the evidence handling probably would have already been completed and or assigned to other CSIs (if there was much at all considering most of them were set up to look like natural, if ill-timed, deaths). But he's been with the Recolle Crime Lab for eight years now, so if he wants to go digging around on cases not directly assigned to him, he knows the right people to ask. That being said, he generally handles fingerprints, ballistics tests, and non-organic trace evidence.

But let's say he gets back to work in September and hears that the majority of a crime ring up and dropped dead in less than the span of a month, most of seemingly natural causes. Would he be suspicious or morbidly curious, and want to take a look at those files? Hell yes.

Oh, please, yes. Let's have these two run into each other.

The first thing Tatsuo will chase down is whether there were any toxicology tests done on the deceased (which, naturally, wouldn't show anything except "this dude had a heart attack??? it looks natural???"). And that's probably about as much as he's going to be able to get done before they're all digitized lmao

For added fun, Tatsuo and Matt happen to be best friends, which isn't exactly a secret. Tatsuo drops by Matt's place of work, Matt drops by his, they both drop by the police station. But, you know, enjoy wondering what they're talking about privately, Akira.
