tartarus info post

My post won't be as pretty as Hei's on Mementos, but now that Tartarus is available to other player characters, I thought I'd write up a quick summary too, for those unfamiliar with the Persona 3 canon!

WHAT IS TARTARUS?

In Persona 3, Iwatodai's Gekkoukan High School transforms into Tartarus during a special time of the day called the Dark Hour. During this extra hour between days, the high school gains over 250 floors that are infested with dark creatures called Shadows. Minato, Minako, and their SEES teams climb the tower in the hopes of finding answers about the Shadows' existence at the top.

INSIDE TARTARUS

Unlike Mementos, which has the extra feature to change people's hearts from within it, Tartarus is for training purposes only. You can collect treasure along the way, of course, in the form of actual treasure boxes or drops from Shadows, but ultimately the goal is to fight the Shadows in order to reach the staircase leading up to the next floor. In doing so, you will eventually reach a floor with an stronger than normal, guardian-type Shadow that you must defeat before continuing on.

Upon entering Tartarus, you will be in the lobby. It is Shadow free, and acts as a safe haven for your base of operations. Electronics don't work in Tartarus though, so you won't be able to call for help once you're in the middle of a fight!

A mysterious glowing blue door is on the far left, but it only opens to certain people, so good luck trying to get in. The blue stairs lead up to an elaborate, clock-like entrance of the second floor and thus the inside of Tartarus proper. The door is also a teleporter. It takes a person to the highest floor that was previously visited, or floors with guardian Shadows. It's not just a one way trip, though! Floors with guardian Shadows also have teleporters you can freely use to go back to the lobby, just in case you aren't ready for the fight.

Each floor is a maze, and the layout changes every day, so adventurers are advised to bring paper and pencils to map out each floor and avoid getting lost! Teleporters appear on these normal, non-mini-boss floors as well, but like the layout of the floor, they are not always in the same place as they were before, and are only one way to the lobby.

There are various blocks to Tartarus, each with their own distinctive looks. Here's a sample of some of the first few blocks!

Each block has its own theme music, and if you listen hard enough, you might hear some special music, too...

You're pretty much guaranteed to see blood everywhere no matter how high up you go, though.

SHADOWS

In Persona 3 canon, Shadows take on a variety of appearances, but the most common of them look like black blobs with a mask on them. For Recollé's Tartarus, however, the Shadows will take the form of evil Personas to match up with Mementos. At the time of writing this, there are four normal Shadows and one special Shadow available to encounter!

You can see their stats on this handy guide that Yuff made here, just click on the Tartarus tab at the bottom. Or you can click the links below and look up their P3 stats (not their P5 stats, that's for Mementos!) to see what they're capable of.

Pixie
Slime
Unicorn
Anubis: can be considered a guardian Shadow at this period of time.
The Reaper: a very dangerous, very high level Shadow that will show up if you stay too long on one floor. When you hear the rattling of his chains, that's the signal that he's nearby and is searching for you and your party members. Run for the stairs onto the next floor to avoid him; he won't follow.

RECOLLÉ'S TARTARUS

As I mentioned before, Tartarus lacks any special features other than providing a place to slay monsters, so official quests issued by the mods are likely limited to fetch quests or monster hunts. Personally, I would recommend going to Mementos for an official quest instead. But if you'd like a Tartarus mission, you can of course sign up for those, right here!

However, in the more likely case that your character is going in to train without going through official channels, Minako is always available as a guide to anyone who wants to venture in. In the lobby there will be a big treasure chest with healing items available for people to take, and a note taped to the clock door says:

Hi! If you don't know where you are, don't go through the door, it's dangerous! Leave the building and call me first at XXX-XXX-XXXX. If you know what you're doing, good luck to you, and be careful! --Minako Arisato

Drop her a line in her inbox if you'd like her to tag along on your adventure! Since July is the first month with Tartarus in game, I'll be putting up a log for anyone who would like to have their character dabble in this part of the Persona 3 world. Please look forward to it!
