JULY AND AUGUST EVENT - PLANNING AND NOTES
Hello everyone! We’d like to gather your attention for a few brief moments to discuss the state of the city, the wrap of June’s event, and a few things of what to expect going forward including JULY AND AUGUST’S EVENTS.
First of all, thank you for everyone who has been turning in their threads to the post on the mod journal! It’s been very helpful in keeping track of what efforts are going where and how these will be impacted going forward. Please remember to submit threads before the first of July, and please remember that you may qualify for freebies via these threads! Check out the plotting post for June for information about those freebies.
As June starts to come to a slowdown, we are officially in summer-mode here in the city of Recollé. Whether you’ve managed to take your finals or not, school’s out for summer and won’t resume again until after Labor Day. The barriers around the various regions have begun to fall and become punctured, allowing NPCs to filter back in from time to time. PCs may be able to make phone calls to outsiders last for up to 90 seconds. It seems almost like things are going to start reverting back to normal…but…
What if? It’s a question we ask ourselves time and time again. What if we had made this choice instead of the one we chose? What if we picked this career path instead of leaving it behind? What if we owned a dog instead of a cat? Little things like this can have a profound impact on who we are as people and how our lives have been shaped.
So what about Retrospecters? What if..?
JULY
July’s event will allow for players to create a brand new AU to play with! This will allow players to test out new ideas that they’d wished to apply to a character’s original AU, create bonds that were not possible because of different app cycles, play a different part of their character, etc. This allows for players to also revive their characters and give them a chance to find new direction with them.
Q: How will this be accomplished?
Like for all AU plotting, we will be posting an AU workshop. This will function like a normal AU workshop where you list a bit about your character, what you’re looking for and what you might be able to offer! This workshop will be live for at least a week prior to the event to allow for players to plot with one another, generate ideas and etc.
Additionally, this form will have a few extra questions to answer to assist in the playerbase knowing what to expect from their CR for the future going forward!
Q: Can I opt out?
Absolutely! We’re not going to force anyone to play with this mechanic and they’re free to play along with their new AU’d friends. Furthermore, if you decide to opt in later, characters may develop a new AU up to the end of July. After that will be August’s event and they will not have the opportunity to go through these changes.
Q: What can my AU be?
Anything! You won’t have to write a new app but you are free to apply different ideas to your character to change their history and appearance in-game. Characters can be from anywhere around the world including Recollé itself. Perhaps your character will have different life experiences or hobbies that drastically change how they would interact with the world around them. Please keep in mind that if you choose to commit to playing with a new, temporary AU, you will be using this new AU as your primary focus for the duration of the event! Please do not create one new AU and then switch to another new AU halfway through the month!
At this time, to keep things clean, we would not be accepting submissions for new locations to be added to the locations page. However, you are free to make them up yourself for your own personal use.
Q: So if we’re playing out the AU, what happens next?
Gameplay will proceed as normal. We will have an event log for July featuring things happening around the city and the four regions, along with some special options for maximizing the playing of your AU. More information will be available in the July event log!
Q: So what about regains for AC and otherwise?
As usual, we will have freebies! We will have freebies and you may regain memories as normal.
Q: What about my character’s powers and items? And what about pre-established events such as past game threads, etc?
Those can stay! As they would have the opportunity to regain them even with their current AU, we do not feel it’s fair to take those away. Threads and events with past CR may also remain game canon and you are free to alter them as fit based on your new AU.
We will also allow you to play with how much of their regained canon memories they keep during this event! If you want them to remember everything so far in addition to their new backstory, cool! If you’d rather start from a very blank slate, that’s also acceptable.
Q: If I opt out, what’s there to do? Furthermore, is this the only thing happening in July?
For those who will not be participating in an AU alteration, things will proceed as normal! We will update any changes made to the city and the four regions post-June’s event, and as with normal months there will be effects and events happening. These will be clarified in July’s event log as well! Open-world exploration will be allowed as usual and characters may find that they have events or mini-player plots they’d like to run during this time.
Q: It says in June’s plotting post that NPC quests won’t be given?
Correct! Instead of individually-based NPC quests, due to the nature of this particular two-part event there will be a minor change. Characters may sign up for smaller quests in order to help build CR, work with personal growth and development, and explore various regions. However, these will not be facilitated by Zee! A July top-level will go in the Assignment Board post for players to reply to and quests will be generated from there.
Q: And then what about August?
The new AU will be played through August as well as characters not only juggle regaining their original AU selves but their original canon selves. How much or how little you play this is, again, up to you. August’s event primarily will deal with character development, emotion sharing and bonding, and further exploration of characters themselves versus what’s going on in the city. Characters will be deep-diving into what it means to truly know someone and know yourselves and face challenges, hardships and unusual situations.
Furthermore: July and August’s event will give characters the opportunity to fail to regain their original AU self! We will elaborate on this mechanic come August, but characters will have the option to fail and players may continue to play their new AU. They will stop receiving flashes of their original AU at that time, and at a further later date (September or October), a future event will give them the chance to rectify their failures should you, the player, wish to.
If you choose to keep your new AU, we would ask for an additional little blurb to be added to your application kept in your journal outlining what changes have been made to the AU history. This will not only help us keep track of who has permanently changed and help your gamemates as well.
Q: If we choose to have our character fail, what happens next?
Characters would remember only the new AU. Once they have officially failed (and this applies for both failing in August and failing again in October, if you wish), they will lose all memories of their original AU life. It will be essentially like apping in with a brand new character history. Characters will remember game events that have happened though.
For characters who do not fail, they will soon forget their temporary AUs as the memories from those fade out. Should their CR opt for a new AU, they would still remember the original AU for that character (much like if a character drops and a new player apps in with a new AU.)
Memories with your CR could also still have occurred in the framework of your new AU. We will leave the details up to individual players and their CR.
With that said, we understand there will be a lot of OOC coordination for your AUs and will require coordination prior to the AU workshop. The workshop is currently live and you may post at your leisure! Please note we will not be keeping up a directory as usual but encourage everyone to tag around and generate ideas together. More information will be given on July’s event log which will go up on July 3rd as usual.
Thank you guys for your time and attention!

second off, a question: Is it possible for there to be pre-existing CR that gets built into these new AUs? Like, characters A and B were friends in their original Recolle AUs, but now character A is a new AU version where A and B are siblings (but B is still their original AU where A and B were friends). How does that shake out?
no subject
Honestly really glad to hear it, so thank you!
In a case like this, you are 100% free to do this if players A and B both agree on these differing AUs! Think of it in a way as if two players apped in with a shared AU, player B dropped, and then someone apped character B with a new AU. The two characters would then just have a differing set of AU memories until the event ends or if the players decide to keep the different AUs.
Hope this helps!

I have a question, and I apologise if I'm just not understanding the explanation right! SO, FOR EXAMPLE, if I choose to take up a new AU, but retain canon memories regained and Recolle memories/dev/CR, how would this be reconciled for the character with the new AU? As a hypothetical example, if Miai had a thread with someone being sad about his family, and in his new AU he has a much better relationship with them, how would he recall that event?
no subject
We apologize for not making it super clear as well. If you choose to take a new AU, essentially the past memory would be sort of hazy and unfamiliar! Using your particular example, Miai would remember the interaction as something a little hazy and hard to recall. He might think it was an effect of Retrospec messing with him back then or even a dream he once had. It will register as "not quite real", more or less.
We hope this helps!

Not very. We will be laying out everything you need at the very beginning of August so it will be doable for characters to succeed early if they wish! Additionally, we will also allow handwaving of success should a player need to.
We hope this helps!

The modteam talked it over and we're gonna go ahead and allow for a half-fail option as well! This way players may keep certain aspects of their AU but not a full-blown change. We would ask that players still update the apps in their journal with a new AU blurb about the things that have changed just like if someone goes full-blown failure, but otherwise we're totally okay with that.
Hope this helps!

Since physical changes are part of the regain mechanic, how physically different can a standard Recolle AU version be?
Like maybe born a different race and/or gender?

Actually, sure, something like that is totally fine if you want to temp-remove those! Anything that could be feasibly be added like body art, piercings, hair extensions, contact, etc, could be removed (or added!) for the sake of the new AU.
Hope that helps!

Also: where should we sign up for alternate journals specifically? Just here or like will there be a space on the upcoming post?

1) As I recall, when phone contact with people outside the city was first restored, a single 90-second convo with someone was pretty much It (with any subsequent attempts having worse and worse reception / more and more growling on the line until it became pointless again). Has anything changed in that respect, or is the connection slowly being rebuilt? (That is, if Jamie talked to his mom for 90 seconds around the beginning of June, will he be able to talk to her for 90 more seconds in July? Or is it still pretty much just a one-shot with each person outside the city?)
2) What happens if characters who change AUs look back at their in-app message history? From their perspective, will all the stuff they posted sort of be rewritten to line up with their new histories, or will it all be the same as it is currently (with the new-AU character not being able to understand or remember all this stuff that "they" supposedly wrote)? (Or will there just be some kind of glitch that temporarily prevents characters from being able to look at their old posts and comments?)
no subject
With regards to message history, yes! Some messages may appear to be blurred out or an ERROR message comes up when they try to read something that doesn't entirely line up. These may become more clear as they start to recall their original AUs selves.
Hope this helps!

The "Q: What about my character’s powers and items? And what about pre-established events such as past game threads, etc?" Makes me think they've been on it for a while? I just want to make sure.

Would changes such as becoming a vampire be okay? Just in the sense that blood would do something for them? Not a major physical change?

Like for example if a character has a new AU during the next two months then regains their original AU, will they think back to all that time they were in that new AU headspace hanging out in their temporary home and going to their temporary job and draw up a blank?
What about confusing moments that sort of mixed both AUs thanks to talking to unaffected characters or remembering their original AU? Would they be aware that they thought back in August that Character 2 was their childhood friend for a moment there?
tl;dr I'm trying to wrap my head around how much basic information about whichever AU fades out characters will still have, and how they'll remember those two months.
no subject
Think of it more like if a character reverts back to their original AU, they'll vaguely remember the last two months but it'll be kind of hazy and almost easy to brush it off as a Retrospec effect or a dream. They will be aware that these things happened regardless, but the difference would be in believing what is true versus "oh, that was a weird experience."
More information on how this will proceed will also be forthcoming in July and August's events.
Hope this helps!

okay, so, i just wanna make sure i'm understanding these fail/half-fail options correctly! bear with me if i'm being a total idiot; apologize in advance!
failing means your new au = permanent au, that much i get. but failing also = keeping game canon memories, yes? or do they only remember the events in a broad sense? for example: if i were to make keigo fail, would he remember being explicitly involved in the february plot (and subsequently getting mauled by ms harpy)? or would he only remember the vague details of that point, such as groups leaving to go on the mission? would he have been retroactively removed from his participation in those events, or would he retain those memories in a more... altered/adjusted manner? so, that is to say, rather than remembering himself at 20 going into the temples, he'd remember himself at 32 in the same events?
in addition, if he half-fails, how do you guys want us to reconcile any resulting conflicts? so, again, to use age as an example: if keigo half-fails and retains the advanced age i picked for him (33) would he mentally revert to 21 and basically have to deal with a freaky friday-type situation of being a younger person in an older body? or would he retain the Wisdom and Maturity of the 12 years difference? would he be stuck enrolled in college at 33, or could he retain bits of his temp AU? aaaaaaaand in regards to keeping his age and reverting everything else: how would you like us to reconcile the resulting gap and dissonance from having memories of being a younger age, but the events only having occurred a few months ago? if... that makes any sense at all.
basically, i'm leaning towards full-on fail for keigo, but i wanted to make sure what, exactly, i'd be losing aside from his previous AU history (which i'm p okay with, considering my temp AU isn't drastically different from his original AU and it allows me to fix up stuff/tweak things).
sorry for the tl;dr, guys! i hope that all makes sense...

Whether you pass or you fail, you will keep game canon memories! However, if you fail, some things about your game canon memories will be vaguely altered so you will remember the general scope of things, but little details might be changed. For example, if a character in their first AU didn’t get along with their family and told character B about it, in the new AU if they have a good relationship with their family, they would feel that the past conversation was a mistake or potentially a Retrospec effect.
In your example, he would remember being involved in the February plot and everything! He would remember the chain of events, but yes, he would remember himself at 32 rather than 20.
If he half-fails, it wouldn’t be a freaky-friday type situation in that case! Physical changes and mental changes such as that would remain altered even with half-failure. He could retain bits of his temp AU, you would just have to tell us which parts.
Essentially if he half-fails, you could have it be sort of hazy for him to remember the large gap difference. He could remember some things from his new AU life but essentially the gap would be written off as unimportant and slotted in as potentially just a Retrospec effect (i.e. “wow I deaged and that was weird, good thing things are normal again.”)
Hope this helps!

For his new AU, Togusa has a daughter. If he were to go back and look at the memories in his cyberbrain of earlier in the year, like New Year's, have the digital copies of his memories been altered, too? To fit with the example: does he remember taking his daughter to the shrine, or does he remember going alone?
no subject
In a case like this, his digital memories will have been altered as well!
We hope this helps!

If a character A has a slightly different AU, and character B also has a different AU, would character A remember B's original AU?
Sorey's upbringing is changing but everything else is staying the same, including students, coworkers, etc. that he's had the past year. I'm trying to figure out if he would know something is deeply wrong with others, if not himself-- such as his English teacher suddenly becoming a music producer.
Thanks!
no subject
If characters A and B are changing at all even in the slightest, they will not remember the original AUs! The only characters who will remember the original AU at all are characters who are not changing at all.
Hope this helps!
